I couldn't agree with this article enough! I made the mistake of reading one of them and now I get them all the time on my feed! Ugh.

The better way to think about it is what you suggest - a self-supporting hobby. For my wordpress blog (which I've had since blogger days) I've always managed to cover the costs of hosting and so on, and when I do I feel it successful. Although it has given untold amounts of value over the years.
