Apart from child labor for cobalt mining (not a small thing) we need new batteriy tech otherwise countries will war over the limited cobalt and lithium if EVs are to scale globally. China has control of mines for Cobalt in DRC. so it is too late for US, unless the tech changes for batteries. I really hope so - for the people working in these mines and the toxic waste they produce.
