It’s hard not to feel overwhelmed by the climate crisis.

More than two-thirds of Americans in a 2020 poll by the American Psychiatric Association are somewhat or extremely anxious about the effects of climate change.

But you can make a difference with even the smallest actions. Recently I have felt a renewed sense of urgency about the state of the planet. I’ve been experimenting with macro- and micro goals over the past few months.

I know one person’s actions is not the entire answer to the climate crisis, it is a team effort. But I do know I need to be able to look at the 10 years old (and under) I know in the eye, and say I did my best with what I knew at the time.

Start with a macro-goal for the month, such as “shop locally,” then break it down into eco-friendly micro-goals you can easily achieve.

Here are ten realistic micro-habits to help you save the planet every day.

Shop locally

#1. Shop for fresh, local groceries with less packaging

#2. Bike or walk to local shops or farmer’s markets

#3 Share a box of vegetables with neighbors or flatmates
